Style Information

A Rye Beer can be either an ale or a lager that is brewed with at least 20% rye malt. The color can range widely from pale yellow to dark brown. The aroma usually has a notable spicy quality from the rye malt used in brewing. Hop aroma and flavor are low to medium. Darker versions of this style will usually have a notable roasted grains quality, somewhat similar to dark rye bread. There may also be hints of caramel, toffee malt sweetness and chocolate. There have also been notable cross-over lately in the craft brewing world between rye beers and India Pale Ales, among other styles. ABV can range from 3.8% to 8.7%. IBUs should range from 10-40.
