Style Information |
Sweet Stouts may also be called "Milk Stouts" or "Cream Stouts". This is a stout style that contains lactose, which is a sugar in milk. This sugar adds sweetness to the beer, along with a slightly thicker body. The color should be the same as other stouts - very dark, usually dark brown or black with minimal or no light getting through. The aroma should have a malt sweetness, with hints of cocoa powder, chocolate and caramel apparent. Hops may be noted, but should not dominate and is usually not even apparent. The taste has a much less roasted bitter taste than other stout styles. As with the aroma, there should also be notes of cocoa powder, chocolate and caramel. The feel should be full bodied. ABV should range from 3% to 6%. IBUs should be low, from 15 to 25. Some history from Wikipedia: "Milk stout was supposed to be very nutritious, and was given to nursing mothers. In 1875, John Henry Johnson first sought a patent for a milk beer, based on whey, lactose, and hops." |
