Style: Herbed / Spiced Beer

Style Information
Herbed or Spiced Beers are beers that use herbs or spices in addition to malts and hops. The base style of the beer will dictate how the herbs or spices work in terms of flavors and aroma. The impact of the additions can range from subtle to intense, based on both the base beer style and the herbs or spices used. Using less hops in the boil allows the flavor additions to contribute more to the flavor profile. At competitions, if no chocolate or coffee category is being used, these beers are entered into this category by the judges. ABV ranges based on the base beer style (from 2.5% to 12% or higher). IBUs are generally low in this "style", as the brewer usually tries to allow the herb and spice additions to stand out a bit. IBUs can range from 5 to 70.
