I wish I were as lucky as Stone. They make a 13th Anniversary beer and it turns out like this? Wow. Pours a rusty, auburn hue with good clarity. Excellent head retention--the creamy sawdust head hardly budges as it leaves some thick webs of lacing along the inside of the glass. The smell hits me before I even pick up the glass. Foresty hops burst with grapefruit and cedar galore, while a huge balance of luscious amber malts drop notes of caramel-coated apples, peanut toffee, and Sugar Daddies. Slight booziness, too.

A big, chewy malt profile piles toffee and caramel upon a toasted nuttiness. An aggressive hopping takes hold mid-palate, dropping raw, leafy hop notes that suggest pine and citrus peel. Finish of booze and more hops, with layers of dark fruit and rum all the way down. Mouthfeel is thick and somewhat harsh, even for Stone's insane standards. Nice carbonation level, but the aggressiveness could stand to be toned down a bit. A few months in the cellar should fix that! Congrats on unlucky number thirteen, Stone, and here's to 13 more!
