A big thanks to jastack for the opportunity to try another Portsmouth beer!

Pours a light brown color, think apple juice, and a decent finger of foam. Not too much retention, settles down rather quickly.

The aroma is pretty tasty. A bright lemon aroma is the first thing I detected and then banana, yeast, clove, spices, honey, and a good sweet malt base underneath. As it opens up there are hints of apples, pears, grapes, pineapple and mango. Very zesty in one part and fruity in the other. I really like the aroma, very floral, earthy, and yeasty at first but a swirl of the glass rouses the beer and releases the fruity aromas. Nutty and bready aromas begin to show up as the beer comes to cellar and room temperature. I’m also getting something like crumbled crackers.

The taste is a little sweeter than I thought it would be; a pretty hefty malt flavor upfront. Again, very fruity…ripe peaches, pears, some apple near the finish along with a little tanginess. Nutty malts, bread dough, and lightly toasted flavor near the finish. Toast and bits of caramel in the aftertaste with some earthy yeast flavors as well. Semi-dry on the finish.

A little on the syrupy side initially, then a little carbonation livens it up in the finish.

This saison was a little more malty than the others I have tried but it was still quite tasty. Maybe a little more carbonation would pick this one up and not feel so thick and malty on the palate.
