Is this an AA meeting, hello Fred. Pours a mostly hazy golden yellow color with a light amber hue through out. A bubbly white head with limited retention and lacing. A bit dark for style but ok.

The nose is complex. Some grainy and husky notes with a sweeter malt character that lingers. A lot of esters with fruity notes. A odd mango citrus, orange and banana thing. Mixes with a distinct bubblegum and light grapey notes. Some noticeable yeasty notes along with some minor butyric. Very different and not really a barleywine. More along the lines of an American Belgian Golden Strong.

The taste tones down on everything and blends better versus the nose. The malt is bigger with a toffee and grainy taste. Lingers into a more malty undertone with some complexity. Hops come out and really are the only thing that really resemble a barleywine. A more citrus orange flavor but hints of mango and herbal hop notes. A slight salty note that kinds brings a sharp finish to it. The esters and pheonics are strong. Bubblegums and cloves with a hint of oxidation. Noticeable fusel notes that over powers in the end.

The body is full with very limited carbonation. This is a unique beer and I wouldn’t have called it a barleywine but that is kind of what HoTD is all about. For sure could age and hopefully some of the fusel, yeast and oxidation notes would drop out.
