Generously received this wonderful beer from silverx for winning this year’s Beer Advocate Bowl Pick’em. Drank from my Darkness snifter.

2012 vintage

Appearance- Pours a pitch black with a small half finger dark tan head that fizzles away fairly quickly. A decent lily pad cap is left along with a thin collar.
Smell- Maybe not the most potent barrel aged Imperial Stout but it sure is nice. Lightly sweet smelling with a touch of char and loads of chocolate. Mostly chocolate of the milk variety but there is a light sort of bitter dark chocolate hiding in there. Plenty of caramel and coconut, especially as the beer warms. I get quite a bit of the woodiness of the barrel as it adds some vanilla and booze. Definitely a solid nose for still being fairly young.
Taste- Whew! This beer smells older than it tastes as the booze is biting right from the get go. Liquid Tootsie Roll is the first thing that comes to mind as the beer is very chocolaty and somewhat rich. Not as sweet as the nose would lead you to believe either. Some French roast peeks its head in but is quickly ushered out by a bit of barrel and booze. Light vanilla and caramel in the finish but honestly the beer is so boozy at this point that it’s hard to get much else.
Mouthfeel- Velvety smooth and very rich the light carbonation and full body are awesome.
Drinkability- So as of right now this beer isn’t the beer I know it is. I’ve never had one this young and the booziness is surprisingly overwhelming. I’ve had this beer many times before with anywhere from 1-3 years of age on it and those were much tamer. Either way, still enjoyable. Thanks much!
