Thanks to tangfoot for sending me this one as part of the Top 100 BIF. This was one of the first craft beers I ordered online a couple years ago and I remember I used to describe it as “strong and bitter.”

This bottle was bottled on: 02/14/08
A concentrated aroma of citrus and pine hit my nose as soon as I lift the cap.

Pours an amber color with some yellow spots when held to the light. A dense two inch head formed and takes a few moments to settle down, but I can use this time to describe the aroma.

Lots of citrus but it’s a sweet citrus, and there is a brown sugar sweetness mixing in with the hops. Some pine needles are there too but the bready, toasted, malt is beginning to clear its throat and say “I’m here in good measure too.” Caramel hides behind the toasted malt and brown sugar.

Taste is sweeter than the aroma and more balanced with a stronger presence of the malt. Very dough-like with tons of toast and caramel. Brown sugar is near the finish. There seems to be some hop bitterness trying to attack the tongue but the sweetness washes it away. Not bad, quite the change from west coast ipas that’s for sure. This would make a good one to go for when you want an imperial ipa with more malt presence.

Mouth-feel is good to very good. Goes down smooth and the alcohol is almost non-existent.
