1985- My 27th birthday beer and a beer that is also 27 years old. Brasserie d'Achouffe and Moeder Lambic got together mad this beer to "welcome" Pope John Paul II on his visit to the Benelux region in 1985. That visit didn't go so well for the Pope who was very unpopular there at the time. This tripel (and possibly a blend with lambic) has held up great in the past 27 years. Cork came out easily with a small pop and the beer is still fully carbonated. Nose is rustic with a slight hint of sour grapes, hay, and lemons. The taste is just a good with a really forward note of green peppercorns followed with some sweetness, lemon rind, and an earthy tartness and a small amount of oxidation. My only complaint here is that the body has thinned out quite a bit probably since it was brewed. Other than that, it's an outstanding beer brewed the year I was born, and the label is awesome. What else is better than a gnome pissing on the pope? 7% ABV
