Big thanks to my buddy Danny for opening up this gem for us tonight (Feb. 24) at La Bella, what a find!! This bottle was from 1999! I really didn’t know what to expect, I was just hoping to get something drinkable and was I surprised.

Poured a cloudy golden color with a few bubbles…even after a few minutes I could still see some bubbles racing up the side of the glass.

The aroma was just so complex and funky, and it continued to develop throughout the night. Light lemon, lots of funk, very weird funky, I have not come across this type of funkiness before. Some earth, light toast, subtle green apple and grapes. Later on I can smell some cheese, leather, and feet. Very musty. You just cannot replicate this aroma in a “fresh” bottle and by fresh I meant recently released…it just developed overtime and transformed into a funk monster.

Very complex on the palate, old grain flavor, brett, leather, apples, slight vinegar with a medium dry finish. Crisp at first and but then the dryness really took over. Some toasted flavors. Very funky with some old leather flavor, a bit of mustard and old lemon. Absolutely no malt sweetness. Later on I picked up flavors of pineapple, plastic and cob webs (or what I imagine they would taste like).

Surprisingly, this beer was still very well carbonated, dry and citrusy in the finish. When went in to take a sip, or tried to take a gulp, I barely made a dent in my glass, this beer took a long time to finish.

Easily the most unique gueuze I have had thus far.
