Score Appearance Smell Taste Mouthfeel Overall Impression Year

Poured beautifully into a wide-mouth wine glass. Deep amber, almost brown in color, with a pretty decent head that dissipated very quickly to nothing.

The aroma makes my mouth water, but it is not overpowering. It is sour, but not too much, and there's a lot more going on as well. There's some sweetness up close that reminds me of pancake syrup, but mostly it smells like a fine wine. Even my wife thinks so.

Immediately upon tasting, it is obvious that this is like no other Wild Ale I've ever had. It has some sourness and yeast funkiness, but it isn't very strong. Mostly, the beer is crisp and smooth from the barrel aging, with flavors of light red wine, and oak dominating. Other flavors I got out of it were some sweet syrup and a little bit of nuttiness.

The mouthfeel was very good, perfect carbonation and a nice lingering finish that didn't get too sour. Mostly it just made me want another sip.

Overall, I was very impressed with this beer. It wasn't what I was expecting, but Allagash has done a great job of putting their own stamp onto this style.
