Cap'n Skoon's Ballistic Stout by Westbrook Brewing
American Double / Imperial Stout
10.00 % ABV

For our Second Anniversary beer, we tapped into the legendary fictional adventures of the mythical Cap’n Skoon to bring you this monster Baltic Stout. It’s big and roasty like an imperial
stout but fermented with a German lager yeast. Ideal for sipping now, or be like the Cap’n and stash some away in your cargo hold for the years to come. Cheers!

22 oz bottle picked up either at Piggly Wiggly Homewood or Hop City Birmingham. Served up in a tulip.

A: Pours up a jet black body that is incredibly inky and glossy. The body is completely opaque with no chance of light peeking through. The pour got me about two fingers of thick, dark brown head. The weight of the beer leaves a slight film on the glass and causes the lace to slip slowly back into the top cap. Remaining lace is spotty and sporadic.

S: Sweet malts fill the air first and foremost. This moves into a touch of smoke and a good amount of roast. Coffee works its way in a bit along with some dark chocolate. A bit of dark fruit with just a touch of tartness (nothing crazy or over abundant). With all that said, the aroma is a touch light, but the depth is nice.

T: Roasted malts start things off in this department along with a touch of dark coffee goodness. Things sweeten up a bit with some cream and dark chocolate. Shifts into earthiness and some nice nuttiness. Touch of bitterness but I think it comes more from the roasted malts rather than any hopping. There is touch of what may be astringency when the beer warms completely, but nothing incredibly damaging. Just fantastic stout flavors with plenty of no frills goodness going on.

M: Full bodied with a moderate carbonation. Silky and smooth on the palate. Coats the palate and allows flavors to linger and fully develop. ABV is warm on the throat and belly. Aftertaste is all roasted malt, nuts, and coffee.

OA: Very tasty stuff. Another damn fine beer from Westbrook. It doesn't push the boundaries of what one would expect from a big stout, it just does everything a stout should do incredibly well. Roasty, warming goodness in a big beer package. Would absolutely drink again.

Served In: Tulip
