Whitetail, Hayward

Chief Blackhawk pours chestnut brown with mahogany highlights when backlit. A one + finger beige head formed on the pour that slowly feel to a thick cap becoming creamy as it does. Leaves nice drink lines after each sip.

Aroma consists of lightly roasted malts. A slight lactic aroma comes through toward the middle with a nice helping of bittersweet chocolate bringing up the rear. Mild metallic twang toward the back, slightly weaker than I'd like.

Flavor is right on with the aroma minus that metallic twang. Starts off with lightly roasted malts. Mild dark berry and lactic qualities come through mid-palate. Finishes with a slightly gritty bittersweet chocolate on the swallow. Again, very common flavors but the pieces fall right into place making this a good drinker.

Medium bodied with a slickness on the swallow. Sluggish carbonation lets this beer push through on its own.

Good drinkability. A porter that's exceptionally easy to put away. Good drink on cooler Fall nights.

Chief Blackhawk is one of my favorite sessionable porters. It's to bad it's not sold down here in Illinois cause the fridge would be stocked up this time of year. Another good brew from Tyranena.

This poured out as a great solid dark, leathery brownish black color with slivers of dark, ruby red highlights. A finger high head was produced of creamy, tannish foam that faded slowly leaving a thin haze on top with slight patchy lace. Smell is quite nice, although its a bit faint, but whats there is a sweetish, coffeeish aroma with some hop notes near the back. Taste is a mild, lightly earthy and deep, slightly burnt roasted malt in flavor with a hint of coffee and cocoa, and is sweetly smooth the whole way through with caramel notes lingering. Nothing really stands out to much in the flavors, its solid mildness is quite nice though with a solid medium, nearly heavy body and has a nice, slightly bittering tangyness, that gets carefully dry in the finish. Another fine brew by Tyranena!

Color is black, no light getting through at all. Decent light tan foam that settled down decently fast. Smell is a bit muted, although you do get a very minor roasted malt smell. Not much else. Taste is equally muted, and allows you drink take a rather large drink. I took about a third of the glass on the first drink. It tasted really good, but muted, and was a nice balance after being outside in the cold getting some last minute seasonal yard work done. You get a roasted taste first, then that fades fast and you get a supr slight bitterness near the end. Have to admit that it's a bit watery. Feel is actually the best part. Carbonation is really low and the felel is just there enough to linger a bit.

Overall, not as impressed as I was hoping. I know Tyranena does great work. I've had most of their stuff and I'm virtually never let down. This one, however, was a little watery and the smell and taste were muted. Good bottle but not as good as I've expeccted in the past from them.
