Clear copper color, small beige compact head, lots of sheeting lace - Alpha King "Gorgeous George the III" Pale Ale, yep...that'll do.

Mighty fine hopified wiffer for an aroma, highly sweet, softly resinous, calming citrus, slick pine, freshly floral; its got it all in the hop profile. Dreadnaughts little brother for a nose. A hop bouquet! Nicey nice. Yum.

Taste has a well rounded front, slight fruity malts with hop flavors of dulled citrusy stuff. Builds quickly from there with fresh floral tones, crisp yet green like a green bean, toasty just past midway, growing into lingering hop piney bitterness which is pretty full of good Ol' alpha acids to fade off and squeeze out any sweetness remaining. Quite juicy and resinous with a favorable drying of bitterness. Some slight toffee eeks its way onto the sides of the cheeks super later.

Feel is clean, slick, quick the whole way through, about medium body, nearing more lighter due to its remarkable cleanness - calming and smooth in the front, wafting hoppy finish of refined bitterness and light drying for its back.

It's been along while since I've had this, my memory of it had completely diminished 'til now. Now that I've had it again; well I'm wishing 3F still was available here.

Pours a dark amber color with a thick 1.5 inch head with a lot of good lacing.

Great grapefruit and hop smell to it.

Fruity citrus and hop flavor with just the right amount of malt. This is one damn good beer.

Wish that this was sold this in my area. I had to order it from John's Grocery In Iowa City. I have a feeling that I will be ordering more of this in the future. The more I sip it, the better it gets. Wish I could get other Three Floyds brews after this one.

Old Review
12 oz bottle thanks to Goliath. Poured into a shaped pint glass.

A:Poured a nice caramel/copper color that had a beautiful inch and a half of head. The head had great retention, lasting almost the entire beer. Big time, sticky lacing.

S: Smell is of citrus/earthy hops, sweet, bready malt, and a touch of medicinal alcohol.

T: Taste is an amazing balance of citrus hops and sweet bread malt. This beer has nice tones of grapefruit and orange, but the malt adds a nice sweetness that balances this sweet heart out. There is also a touch of medicinal, herbal, metallic flavor, but is welcome and not at all unpleasant. So nice.

M: Medium in body. Carbonation is a bit low but that is the only gripe I have. Smooth and easy drinking. After taste of grapefruit and a just a touch of alcohol heat on the back of the throat.

D: This beer is truly great. I am now a fan. Great balance to this beer and that is what I like in my APAs. Damn near perfect.

Sam's Downers Grove

This is a constant in my fridge. Looking around on BeerAdvocate today I noticed I never took the time to review it. Here it is.

Alpha King poured a slightly chill hazed dirty copper. A 2 finger white creamy head formed on an aggressive pour. Very few, slowly rising carbonation bubbles rise to the head. Leaves some patchy lacing.

I love the smell of a fresh Alpha King. Big piney hops that make my eyes and mouth water along with a squeeze of orange juice. A solid caramel maltiness in the background, just enough so the hops don't run wild.

This beer is considered a pale ale but drinks more along the lines of an IPA. Caramel maltiness starts things off and is quickly taken of by a strong pine needle mouth puckering hoppiness that lingers through till the finish. The finish is even a little more bitter as the caramel sweetness disappears.

Body is on the lighter side of medium. Sluggish carbonation lets the brew work it's way through at it's own pace. Hop bitterness gives the tongue a beating.

This is an incredibly easy drinking beer. Every sip makes you want another. The lighter body makes it easy on the stomach.

The best pale ale I have yet come across. It helps that it's more along the lines of an IPA. An absolute classic and one of my favorites.

Thanks to lightindarkness for this one!

Pours a rich, caramel-looking amber color. Thin, 1/8 inch off-white head that falls away quickly. A little lacing.

Aroma is of sweet malts and big citrus - orange and tangerine, touch of pine. Very enticing...

Oh yeah... I like this. Follows the nose exactly. Orange zest, pine and caramel sweetness. Excellent all the way through the bitter finish.

Medium in body, smooth, dry and ever-so-slightly abrasive mouthfeel. Carbonation is perfect.

This is one hell of an Pale Ale. Nicely balanced, lower ABV, bitter and refreshing... I wish I could have this all the time.
Definitely worth a try!

*Uploading my old reviews, this one has a review date of: 9-3-07. If I can acquire the beer again I will re-review it*

Thanks to BuckeyeNation for the sixer; I’ve had these for a while but haven’t gotten around to review one, and this is my last one and it’s a hot one today.

Alpha King pours an amber color with a good inch of head. A few tiny bubble rise from the bottom of the glass and continues to keep a good layer of foam. The aroma is of pine and citrus hops, grapefruit, lemon and biscuit malt—really pushing it to an ipa standard. The taste is pleasantly bitter and refreshing, one of my favorites to drink on a hot day. Caramel and a touch of alcohol are present as the beer warms up a bit. This is one of the best pale ales out there, but not sure if I could drink a six pack of this without the hops and alcohol affecting my taste buds.

This beer nails it. Crisp grapefruit tartness and smoothness are outstanding. Very floral aroma and balanced pallet make this beer the best Pale Ale I've had (yet...)

Amber with and off white head. Fair retention. Minimal haze. I get some bold citrus (orange or tangerine) hops and rich breadyness for malt in the nose.
Very full flavor. Again citrus hops and robust breadiness from the malt. Maybe some caramel. Moderate body. Not a lot of ligering flavor.

Poured from bottle to standard pint.

A - Nice one finger head. Beautiful rich amber color.

S - Great hop nose with piney citrusnous. This is a pale ale?

T - Much more than your standard Pale Ale here. Taste is reminicent of an IPA, with good upfront hops. Well balanced.

M - Fine carbonation tickles the tongue with a good thick taste.

D - Easily could drink 12 of these, but not going to. Another great offering from Three Floyds.

Heard a lot about this one. I was hoping it wasnt like the movie everyone says is great and then it sucks schlong. Not this one. THis one, IMO, surpassed them. Im a hop head anyway so this was right up my alley. A solid all around brew. Great flavor, freaking smooth finish. NICE!
