Had a chance to try this one back in March, way before the release date and was quite impressed by it. Now that the beer is finished and bottled I was excited to get the chance to try the finish product, thanks to Joey for bringing in a bottle to La Bella Pizza last night.
The beer was a cola color, not completely dark, with some mahogany highlights when held to the light. A nice inch of foam topped the beer and displayed some excellent retention and some soapy lacing on the sides of the glass.
Lemony, herbal, and earthy hoppinness assault the nostrils, hints of coffee, lemon verbena, hints of sage, "hot" hop bitterness that lingers in the back of the throat when you breathe in deeply. Kind of hard to pin down the malts. Hints of brown sugar with a very lemony/herbal aroma combination. A bit of hot alcohol in the background. Very unique and interesting hop profile.
The taste follows the aroma with a rush of herbal and flowery bitterness with a little lemon, toast, coffee, dry and bitter chocolate, and a touch of earthiness by the end. Long lasting bitterness with a semi-dry finish. Light carbonation with a pretty clean hop bitterness on the tongue. Fairly easy to drink for the high alcohol. Wouldn't mind having this one again.
