Had his one on tap at La Bella Pizza on 7-28-09, thanks for the pour, Danny. I've wanted to try this one for a while but never seemed to be able to coordinate with the bar/brewery when it was available on tap before.

The beer was a dark cola color with some fiery orange highlights on the bottom sides. Almost no head on top, just the skinniest ring forms around the glass.

At first I could pick up some floral note, fresh vanilla bean--not imitation vanilla--nutty, sweet cream, and condensed milk. Really not that intense at first, those aromas were quite subtle, but it was mostly due to the beer being too cold. A bit of brown sugar later on. I left the beer sitting for a few minutes, between 5 and 10 minutes, and then the beer really opened up (enough for me to up the score a few points). Chocolate cake, brownies, and chocolate chips began to appear. Lots of sweet chocolate notes, very similar to Southern Tier Choklat but in this case, for being a smoked porter, I would have liked to see a little more smoked and wood characters.

Milk chocolate flavors upfront, vanilla blasts on the tongue, toast, fudge cake, very light smoke in the finish, dark roasted malts, chocolate malts, truly a dessert beer. Low carbonation and a little thin in the finish but that makes this one pretty easy to drink and keeps it from being to cloying. Nice beer overall.

Dark amber with a slight redish tint to it. Nice tan, creamy head. Smell is almost all vanilla with some roasted malts. The smokiness is pretty much gone. Sweet flavor. vanilla again is the main factor here, but ti blends well with the light chocolate and malts. A solid dessert brew.
