Pours a syrupy brown only to settle in the glass as super dark brown, nearly black, excellent lookin' porter. Firm thick, inch tall tannish cocoa colored head that fades slowly leaving hazy thin placed sheets of crispy looking lace all over the glass. Absolutely gorgeous!

Aroma is nice steady sweet chocolate/cocoa, very smooth, rich, and a great smokey richness of roasted deep chocolate and black malts. Even a slight coffeeness noted. Yum!

Taste is quite exceptional, excellently done of smooth sweet chocolate up front, tones of roastyness settle in quickly of smoked black malts. Rich, luscious, and a super interior hop bitterness of mild abode that picks up in the finish with some more roasty smokeyness and hoppy, earthed bitterness and slight dryness of coffee and twinged chocolate late. Good full feel, solid creamyness all through and an excellent lingering finish of slight smoke, what a shock; not.
The drinkability on this is amazing - smooth, rich, creamy, and easy. Thank goodness it comes in the 22oz bomber to help keep the glass full longer, at least for a little while anyway.

22 ounce bomber I picked up from Hop City in ATL last week. Can't believe I have taken this long to work my way to this Stone offering. I love porters but I just never made it to this one. Served up in a standard pint glass.

A: Pours a seemingly dark black in color off the pour. Closer inspection proved that this is an incredibly dark brown instead. Very dark with dark ruby hues. Can't see through it and can't make out a visibly carbonation activity. The head is a little lighter in color than I expected. It is about a finger of light tan head off the pour. Retention is so so, falling slowly to a thin ring that puts up minimal lace. Its not bad looking, but its not exceptional either.

S: You know, its simple but nice. Has a very heavy malt presence. A little bit chocolately and little bit caramel. Getting more of a heavy roast aroma off the malt than a smoked aroma in the flavor. Its just slightly woody and hard to decipher the smoked quality. Touch of hoppiness to it, maybe pine. Touch of coffee as well.

T: Nice as well. Almost mirrors the nose. Bit more chocolatey here. Has a nice roast to the malt and grain for sure. Touch of caramel comes through on the finish as far as malt goes. The hops aren't coming through as much as they were in the nose. Smoke quality is a bit more prevalent, very light and well hidden but present. Just a bit of bitter, dark coffee coming out as well. Damned tasty.

M: Has a bit of weight to it but I would still put it on the heavy side of medium. Carbonation comes across a bit too high for my liking in a porter. Just has a bit too much bubbly quality to it on the throat. Slight bitter but mostly nice and smooth. Aftertaste is all malty goodness.

D: I am very happy with this beer to honest. Sure I can see it being improved but its a good drink. Goes down easy, isn't overpowering or anything crazy. Simple yet still has some complexity to it. I look forward to each sip to see what is there, and that is what I want in a beer. Stone rarely disappoints me, so this is no suprise. Glad I finally picked this one up and I probably will do so again.

22oz. Bomber

Opened with a pfffttt...Poured in my pint glass a viscous black. Very dark. Some dark ruby tinting when held up to the light. A half inch tan head sits on top but fades fairly quickly to an even top coat. Lacing sticks as my glass is tilted but slowly slides back into the abyss that is the body of this beer.

The smell is filled with roasted malt goodness. Along with chocolate and a tiny bit of burnt grain. There is just a slight touch of smoke up front but to tell you the truth I don't think I'd be able to pick it up if I didn't know it was there. As it warms I can pick up the smoke more and more.

The taste is very close to perfect. Starts with a small burnt grain taste quickly taken over by the roasted malts and chocolate. I can't really taste the hops but they're in there. There is a nice bitterness from what tastes like a combonation of hops and darkly roasted malt. The smokiness is there faintly in the back throughout the drink. Very nicely done and balanced.

Mouthfeel is viscous but you could tell this from the pour. It's thick in my mouth but not coyingly so. Silky smooth but somehow a little chewy/gritty. I know that doesn't sound right but that's how it is. I really like the feel especially on a cold night like tonight.

For a smoked porter the drinkability is outstanding. The lower alcohol helps as to not be too big of a beer to drink a lot of.

Stone's Smoked Porter is one of my new favorite cold weather beers. I've always liked smoked porters but so far this is at the top of my list. Excellent example. Warms me up nicely. A must try.

Reviewed from notes from a while ago.

A - Dark brown colored body with bright garnet highlights. Half inch oatmeal colored head with good retention.

S - Smokey dark malts. Dark chocolate. Almost smells burnt.

T - Roasty, toasty and smokey malts envelope the taste buds and don't really let up. Slight flavors of bakers chocolate. Almost no hints of hops at all.

M - Medium bodied with smooth carbonation.

D - Easy to drink as this beer is fairly toned down. Flavorful, but not overly smokey.

Sampled this along side the AK Smoked...could have a big affect on the out come... Appearance is good, nice dark tan head that holds up well. Smell is light, sweet and not very smoky. Taste is solid, smooth. Very little smokiness to it. It’s there, but not extremely noticeable. Body is lacking any sort of part that stands out, very simple. Very good brew, just not a top notch smoked.
