Evil Twin / Stillwater / Stone - The Perfect Crime by Stone Brewing Company
Saison / Farmhouse Ale
6.80 % ABV

Stone Brewing Co. released its last collaboration beer of 2012: Evil Twin / Stillwater / Stone “The Perfect Crime” Black Smoked Saison. In a masterfully orchestrated collaboration of the minds, Jeppe Jarnit-Bjergsø of Denmark’s Evil Twin Brewing, Brian Strumke from Baltimore’s Stillwater Artisanal Ales, and Stone brewmaster Mitch Steele crafted a beer that cleverly expands on the definition of a saison.

(Served in a tulip glass)
A- This beer pours a jet black opaque body with a thin light tan film of head that is supported by bubbles that race out of the abyss and stick to the bottom of the head.

S- The roasted black malt is very mellow with a cold smoke note in the finish. There is a nice saison yeast ester aroma that turns a bit to new sneaker aroma as it opens, but the aroma always stays light.

T- The nice saison yeast character takes on some dry bubble gum qualities followed by a smooth black malt mellow finish. There is a club soda and cold smoke note to the after taste. As the beer opens some lemon tartness grows quite a bit in the finish. It could be hops but not really distinct, but very pleasant.

M- This beer has a medium-light mouthfeel with no alcohol heat

O- This has all the potential for a train wreck but I would say it truly is the perfect storm. All the flavors come through but they are in just the right balance that it doesn’t get ugly. Each sip made me want another sip just out of pure wonderment. The beer is light and bright even though it has some black malt and smoke flavors. Is this the holotype of a Black Saison?
