22 oz bottle that I finally found at the Hop City in ATL. Been trying to get my wheatwine loving, grubby little hands on this beer for a while. Luckily I remembered to look for it amongst all the goodies floating around that store and came up victorious. Served up in a tulip.

A: Very barleywine in appearance. Ha that rich amber, orange glow to this brown body, but its not overly dark. You can see through it and this beer lights up a beautiful amber when held to a light source. not seeing any carbonation activity in this beer, pretty still brew. Took a bit of aggressiveness to get a tiny bit of head out of this beer. All I am left with is a thin but creamy line around the edge of the glass. No real lace to talk about. This just looks like a big ole beer.

S: Sweet goodness. Lots of caramel in this baby. Slightly burnt, absolutely toasted. You can just smell the sugary goodness. A little bit of citrus and herbal hop presence coming out, cutting all this sweetness. Wheat is absolutely in here, bring that nice aroma out. Good and earthy. Just a touch of pear skin rounding this off.

T: Yet again we start off with some serious caramel malt. Sweet, toasted sugar. Getting a really nice wheat presence. Just a wonderful and large does of orange. The orange is mingling nicely with a god amount of booze kickin around in here. Little bit of herbs and spices come out with just a touch of honey. Back end brings out a light note of vanilla (did this see oak at one point or another?). All in all, damned tasty.

M: Full bodied with a light carbonation. Just big and chewy. Good bit of sugary stickiness in here. This beer is big in the ABV department and it doesn't want to hide that at all. Just a big ass warming quality here. Very comforting. Aftertaste is all caramel, orange and booze.

D: You know this is really good. Its a sipper for sure. I am looking at this like a nice liquor. You sip and savor. The alcohol is a bit too big to just sit here and gulp down. This is too taken in moderation and savored which I am doing. Quite good in all departments and I can't complain at all. Fantastic beer and another great offering from the great Smuttynose.

Tainted orange color with a smear of light brown. Glowing, thick hazed body. Thin and patchy ivory capping of loosely placed bubbles that don't last. A thin collar persists though as lacing sticks in stocky webbed strings with lots of thin little fingers.

Aroma is quite nice, reminiscent of a aged barleywine with a penitrating, soft heat of dark citrusy wax and syrupy juices. Orange, peach, tangerine, pineapple, melon, all make for a nice marmalade mix on the nose.

Taste is more flattened and dulled with a pale wheat sweetness bringing a soft, medium tone of orangey-apple pancake syrup. Somewhat bready and beefy, warmth is prevalent, welcome and lasting in the throat. Hints of pineapple tropical gum and wheaty sugars also make some tiny slidings into the play of flavor. But mostly simple, yet satisfying, with a dulled sweetness of tropical fruit tang, wheat based sugars, and a good amount of heated warmth to cap it off to let ya know you're drinking something with some girth to it.

Feel is medium bodied, well heated, smooth, and a low carbonation level seeps in with ease to let the sugars rise before the heat. Slight fresh spearminty pine oils float about the palate on the finishing warmth; late. A nice little addition to the flavors. Made me want more, and so I obliged to partake in some more.

The heat/warmth of this beer is mightily present. It'll hold ya back some, but not much, as this is a solid treat from the folks at Smuttynose.

A - Deep reddish brown pour. Looks like a darker brown from the top, more reddish down below. Very nice color. Head is average, nothing much to it.

S - A sharp, biting scent. There's some sweet notes to it. Maybe some vanilla? I'm not good at discerning scents...

T - Reminds me a lot of the Southern Tier Cuvee Series 2 that I had recently. Sweet but not too sweet. It's not a bad flavor at all, but it's not very complex. Sweet, a slight bitter aftertaste. Meh.

M - Not bad. Average

Overall: Not sure if this "beer" is for me. It definitely has its qualities, but I don't see myself buying it again anytime soon. I can see how some people would love it, but it's not my style, I don't think. Not a bad offering from Smuttynose, but nothing exceptional.
