Batch 74, Bottle 525

A - Holy carbonation batman! I figured this would be full of carbonation when I popped the cap and got a big hiss, but that didn't prepare me for the massive mound of head that formed when I poured this into the oversized snifter. Light cocoa in color, the head is almost 4 inches tall in the glass. Great retention and weblike lacing all over the glass. Body is a very dark muddy brown, but not quite black. Completely opaque.

S - Deep cocoa smells hit initially. Upon further review there is a big lactic note here too, bringing to mind some nice creamy milk chocolate. Then it hits, something that makes this smell completely out of the norm. Huge, sharp hop notes everywhere. Grapefruit and pine needles in abundance.

T - Much more deep and robust than expected. Rich chocolate tones immediately envelope the tongue with cocoa, milk chocolate and some dark chocolate too. They all seem to work in unison here. Light roasty malts with a very slight coffee hint along with some toffee. Bright hops all over in here with an entire pine forest working along with a citrus bite. Citrusy flavors last through to the aftertaste, followed by a bit of chalky cocoa remnants.

M - Rich and full bodied. Smooth and way creamier than expected given the huge head produced.

Overall - I really didn't know what to think when I read that this Imperial Stout was over 100 IBU's. My immediate reaction was I hope it's something like Darkness and I think they do have some of the same qualities. This is a great Impy Stout in it's own right, even if it is not brewed "per style guidelines". If you can get a bottle, do so.
