Captain Fantasy by Short's Brewing Company
Saison / Farmhouse Ale
6.70 % ABV

Captain Fantasy is a lighter bodied ale with a bright, clear, golden color. This saison is brewed with pear to compliment the aromas of spice and the fruity fragrance of Sorachi Ace hops. Captain Fantasy has flavors of sweet pear and tart lemon, and a lively amount of carbonation cleanses and refreshes the palate. The overall fruitiness of Captain Fantasy is interrupted by an assertive hop bitterness that dominates the finish.

Ed, many, many thanks.

Clear as an Arctic night... well, until the bottom 3/4 inch of the beer is poured. Lightly hazy now, with fine particulate to be spotted in suspension. Brassy. Carbonation is bountiful and lively, streamers from all points within. What I like most about this one is the cap. Huge, frothy, whipped egg whites. Sun-peaked mountain tops in color. Lacing is thick and clumpy, leaving exquisite strands woven about the glass. Just ####ing beautiful.

Earthy in the nose. Mild cheese funk, with some mineral pitted fruit notes. Woody fruit - pear (of course), underipened apple. Touch of leathery goodness. Some floral notes as well, but muted.

Profuse hoppiness, indeed. Wasn't expecting that with what the nose lead me to believe, but I like it - and I like it due to the funky balance. Soft cheeses and musty basement, wrapped in leather then rolled in dirt. Yeah. The balance between the two has me shaking my head... the pear jumps forward in the grassy/floral hoppy for-front, and slips away just as quickly towards the tropical fruit mid-palate and into the musty/funky finish. Lightly peppered throughout.

Leaning towards moderate in body, smooth, airy mouthfeel. Carbonation is soft as well, but fitting for the flavor profile. Lightly boozey, dry and amazingly clean in the finish.

Good stuff. Earthy, hoppy, and FUNKY... but not Saison funky. The pear may not be as pronounced as it once was, but I believe what it leaves behind is more of a cheese-like aspect that, truth be known, I really like about this Saison. Refreshing: yes. Enjoyable: yes. Pronounced yet balanced and complex.
