2007 Reserve

Received this in one of a few trades with Vancer, thanks Vance! Schlafly's Reserve Imperial Stout empties black into the snifter, looks dark and deep but shows faint cherry highlights when directly backlit. An aggressive pour brought about a half finger beige head that falls to a cap and leaves spotty lacing on its way.

A healthy dose of bourbon tickles the nose hairs right off the bat followed closely by underipe berries and vanilla from the oak. There is a booziness imparted by the heft of this brew and the bourbon aging. Roasted maltiness lays the foundation and makes for a tasty brew. There even seems to be a molten fudge like quality deep down in there.

To keep from repeating myself I can comfortably say the flavor is spot on with the aroma. Bourbon, vanilla, berries, chocolate and roastiness all come together to create a really good stout. The alcohol is a little bigger than I would like right now but I could see a little time on this taking the edge off.

The mouthfeel is where it should be. There's a good amount of body involved and its slick throughout but the barrel aging brought a nice dryness to make things unique.

Good drinkability for a big barrel aged stout such as this. Smooth, pleasurable and will warm up your cheeks without a doubt.

This is a good offering from Schlafly. One I would not hesitate to pick up again. I have another in the cellar to mellow for a year. I can't wait to give it another go. Good job on the barrel aging.

Thanks to beagle for this brew>

A- Very nice looking brew. At first I thought it would be a little thin and flat, but the head rose up and formed nicely.Very nice lacing on the glass...all the way around.

S- Really good smell. Light bourbon notes, very light actually. Cocoa blends with it. The bourbon does not over power the smell, which is nice. Swirls bring out some sweet malts lying underneath.

T- Booz> omghi. That first sip gets on top of you with the flavor, then it, or i calmed down. Very warming flavor, the alcohol is there for sure, more so thatn the nose. After battling to keep Jahva > BBCS This brew has warmed a bit and blended. The bourbon doesn't dominate the brew, or make you think that you are taking a shot, but is is upfront and the rest of the flavors lag a little. Chocolate and the same sweet malts that were in the nose are there....bur don't do much

M- Solid

O- A really good brew that I am very happy to hav ehad. Thanks migolito

A - Pours a very dark brown body that is completely opaque. Dark khaki/light brown head that is thick and about a quarter inch tall. Made up of mostly small bubbles, but there are some larger ones on the surface in the middle.

S - Vanilla and oak are very up front, but don't seem overbearing. Milk chocolate and a bit of caramel. Some anise.

T - Starts off with deep flavors of chocolate and some espresso. Works into some nice flavors from the barrel aging that don't overpower the flavor of the beer itself, which too many brews can. Very little bourbon here, rather more vanilla and deep oakiness. Some anise and light caramel shoot in for a second, followed by a light bitter finish.

M - Thick and full bodied. Smooth and a touch creamy.

Overall - Very well balanced barrel aged stout here. No one aspect overpowers the beer. The flavors and complexity here just don't make it stand out from the every increasing BA Imperial Stout crowd.

This beer pours a very dark black, not quite motor oil, but close, almost that of a solid porter.. Nice 2 finger head with good lacing.

Wonderful smell of oak, burbon, vanilla, caramel.

Beer tastes great, much of the same as its smell, a good oak/burbon flavor followed by vanilla undertones.

Mouthfeel was good, smooth but a little light for an imperial stout IMO, much more like a porter IMO.

Overall, really liked this beer, its overall aroma, taste and light feel trick you into not thinking its a 10.5 % beer.
