22 oz bottle I picked up from Hop City. Just saw that it was a new beer I hadn't seen and threw it in the cart, probably in hopes that Rogue could change my most recent impressions and actually wow me. Served up in a standard pint glass.
A: You know, this doesn't look half bad at all. Big ole gunsmoke when I popped the cap. Good, solid, amber/brown body making it happen here. The body is crystal clear and appears to be light in body. Heavy carbonation activity moving around in here. This built about a finger of creamy white head. The head has a really nice creamy weight to it and has some damned good retention. It falls slowly to half a finger that really sticks around. Throws up big patches of foamy lace on the glass. Impressed so far.
A: Well . . . it doesn't continue to impress in the aroma department. This is quite weak here with barely any aroma at all and almost no complexity in this department. Pretty much all I am getting here is a hearty German grains presence. There is also almost an adjunct type aroma as well. No oak, no whiskey, no malt presence. This is weird.
T: Hmmmmm . . . its weird because everything is so faint. Yet again we have a majority of grains and an adjunct type flavor. Behind that everything is incredibly muted if at all present. Getting a light caramel malt presence. Vanilla from the oak is incredibly faint and I am not getting any whiskey presence at all. **edit: after this warmed up completely, the faintest whiskey made itself noticeable** I am not saying that the taste is bad but it lacks complexity and depth. Its kind of one dimensional and I expected much more.
M: Has a nice weight to it and it is at a medium (from the look I was expecting it to be a light body, pleasant suprise). ABV is noticeable and this is the biggest similarity to the whiskey note. Has a much more boozy presence in the feel than anything at all with a good amount of heat on the throat. Aftertaste is some faint whiskey and grains.
D: This is very easy to drink but my impression is a bit on the meh side. Its ok and with ok you get an easy drinking beer. Its nothing to big and its absolutely not complex or challenging. Its not going to be a problem to kill this bomber but its just a bit of a let down for me. It could be much more but this beer seems a bit rushed and it didn't seem to get very much attention (unless they were going after UBER subtlety). Its ok. thats the best I can say.
