Rogue knows how to make a beer look good. A dense, foamy, taupe head floats up top, receding ever-so-slowly to form a fat ring of bubbles that drapes lacing along the inside of the glass. Beneath, the body of Captain Sig is murky as the depths of the Arctic waters, with a hazel-brown hue. The aroma is subtle, with caramel malts and brown sugar glaze supporting a modest hopping that adds some orange peel and foresty, floral notes.
The taste is dominantly hoppy--which is fine by me--but I would have liked to see Rogue get a bit more creative with the malt bill, especially given the style. Toasted amber malt and bread crust add a bit of doughy sweetness before a the 80 IBU's take hold. Lots of hop flavor to accompany the bitterness, with grapefruit and pine lasting long into the finish. Great mouthfeel, with a creamy, full body and a spot-on carbonation level that goes great with the hoppy ending. Overall, Captain Sig's is yet another winner for the already impressive Rogue lineup. Recommended.
