I get the opportunity to try this harvest ale thanks to joepais, thanks again Joe! Portsmouth's blog lists this as an ESB. My glass is filled with a murky copper liquid after the pour with very few carbonation bubbles rising slowly to the surface. The ecru head peaked at a finger and a half before slowly falling to a skimming and leaving thin sheet lacing in its wake.

This beer smells very well balanced. Spicy hops kick things off along with husky grains and biscuity malts. There's a mild fresh green quality to the spicy hops. A quick and somewhat sweet flash of caramel brings up the rear and manages to lay down the base for this ESB.

This is how I like an ESB. The balance is there superbly but the finish brings along the peppery hops just enough to leave that spiciness on the tongue. Biscuity malts, husky grains and caramel all come together to make for a nice malt backbone that matches up nicely with the spicy hop profile. The hops are mildly grassy but bring white pepper along for the ride. There's also a cinnamon quality that is mild but comes from the hops as well. This is a very good beer.

The body fits the style well with a mellow carbonation and moderate body this beer just flows through at its own relaxed pace. There's not much noticeable bitterness left behind but the tongue does feel like there have been some hops running across it.

This ESB is highly drinkable. A bomber of this is simply not enough. I picture myself, in the bar, drinking pint after pint of this beer and being perfectly happy with the evening.

I don't come across many ESBs besides the bottles from overseas. It's nice to get the chance to try such a good one as fresh as this Hop Harvest. Thanks for the bottle Joe!
