Steve's, Madison

New Glarus's Road Slush Stout pours the darkest of browns that border on black. A few faint mahogany highlights show through the bottom of the glass and lighten up when directly backlit. A two + finger ecru head formed on the pour and as it fell to the thin cap it left thin slightly broken sheet lacing down the glass.

The aroma is rather soft and tough to pull forward but what is there is inviting. There is a graininess similar to granola is what I'm first hit with along with a mild nuttiness. There is a faint touch of roastiness that adds a sweet character that gives the aroma a little needed depth.

The flavor is quite a bit different then the aroma and is a little more stand up. As soon as this beer hits the tongue there's a pleasant dextrose sweetness that lasts throughout. The flavors really mingle and morph. There's a mild charred roastiness coming along mid palate that is joined by faint vanilla, cola, and that hazel -nuttiness.

The body of this beer is medium but seems lighter at times with a solid carbonation. There is a nice creaminess that keeps this beer drinking very easily.

Road Slush is a very easy drinking stout. I have happily drunk a few of these in a sitting with no problem. This is one of those truly sessionable fall/winter beers.

Road Slush is another winner from New Glarus. Road Slush is a lighter bodied stout that falls right in the lines of a sessionable oatmeal stout. The mild sweetness adds that little extra oomph. I would pick this beer up again without a doubt.

Pours a very dark brown in color, developing a 2 finger thick, creamy, light brown colored head that has above average retention, slowly dissipating to a creamy layer of suds.

The aroma is pretty overwhelmingly roasty, just full of coffee and roasted grain aromas, as well as a hint of chocolate, but mostly just roasty, maybe even a touch smokey...strange.

The flavor is comprised of roasted grains, coffee flavors and some dark chocolate along with some burnt caramel flavors and a nice sweetness towards the end, with next to no bitterness.

The mouthfeel is a touch watery, not thick and chewy like most oatmeal stouts. That said, the flavors were quite good, if not a little bit too roast forward. There is so much burnt grain character it's hard to pick out other small nuances and flavors.

Black. Thin brown foam lasts but a minute before slipping to a fluffy collar ring. Minimal lace sticks as most of the residue glides back into the liquid.

Nice aroma of dark chocolate oatmeal cookies; fluffy and fresh with a slight burnt sugar base and some warming alcohol to it.

Taste is about the same. Minor chocolate fluff with a slightly charred oaty tone with a pleasingly clean robust fashion to its flavors. Smooth and very rounded and a simple finish of creamy cocoa.

Feel is soft and creamy smooth with a nice reducing texture of chocolate and oaty fluff with a simple floating dryness.

Yum! I like this Oaty stout. A solid drinker and a keeper from NG.

A solid pour produces a three finger thick, lightly browned, fairly dense, tan colored head. The beer is a very dark brown, really almost black color that shows a brilliantly clear, rich ruby hue when held up to the light. The aroma smells up front of chocolated, but is quickly dominated by toasted grain notes, some burnt raisin aromas, burnt grain notes as well as notes of charred whole grain bread crust.

This is nice and roast focused without being too harsh. Up front this has a lightness to it that quickly gets a touch viscous as the beer slides across the tongue; the light-medium body helps to balance the dominant roast character. This does finish with a big roast character that produces a dry, bitter finish that lingers on the palate. A touch of dark cocoa is noticeable up front just before the roast character fully kicks in. The beer is then dominated by blackly toasted bread / grain notes, lightly sharp black coffee flavors and a touch of burnt-induced acidity. A touch of malty sweetness becomes a bit more noticeable as the beer warms, but this still finishes quite dry.

This is a nice example of a roast forward stout. I like that it remains balanced / in check and the roast character does not get overly astringent or acidic. I would be quite happy reaching for this when I wanted a session stout.

A - Nice sturdy one inch head sits on top of this one. Made up of uniform tiny bubbles and light brown in color. Body is dark brown, shows some clarity when brought up to the light. Great head retention here.

S - Big roastiness right up front. Oatmeal is actually apparent. Light coffee, some chocolate. Smells good.

T - Big and chocolatey right up front. Milk chocolate seems to be wrestling with dark cacao here, and a good match it is. Roastiness comes in, reminding the drinker of a light coffee roast. Some cocoa seems to come in towards the end, making finish a bit dry.

M - Medium bodied with nice carbonation.

Overall - Very solid oatmeal stout, a style I find I like more and more the more I have. Yet another solid brew from New Glarus.

Color is dark, borwnish, whatever. About what you expect from a stout in general. Smell was nice, with some roasty-ness in there and chocolate. Smell is smooth as the oatmeal seems to stand out somehwat, which is nice. First taste is nice, with the smoothness you expect from the oatmeal. The you get chocolate, maybe some roasted coffee. A touch of bitter and a very very slight touch of alcohol. Really nice. Feel is somewhat thin, but not bad. The only complaint I have on this is that it seems overly carbonated. But not terrible. Certainly doesn't knock this one down much.

Overall, this is a good one for fans of oatmeal stouts. After a few misses by New Glarus on some of the Unplugged Series (for me anyway), this one is a hit. I am partial to oatmeal stouts though, so consider that.
