Lips Of Faith - Prickly Passion Saison by New Belgium Brewing Inc.
Saison / Farmhouse Ale
8.50 % ABV

In a fruit medley of passion fruit and prickly pear, Prickly Passion Saison is New Belgium’s return to farmhouse ales. The fruit juices combine with the tropical esters of an earthy Saison yeast, creating a broad and reaching mango-like character. Deemed “ostentatiously amber,” this Lips selection is guaranteed to provoke the palate.

22 oz bottle picked up for $6.99 at Hop City in Atlanta. Shared with the wife and served up in tulips.

A: Pours up a dark orange and copper body. Held to the light, more bright orange colors push through and add some vibrancy to the copper. The body is clear with just a bit of chill haze. Light carbonation activity going on. The pour got me two fingers of white, airy head. Sadly it has no retention and falls quickly to a thin ring that eventually disappears. No lace to speak of. Pretty meh for the style.

S: Starts off pretty sweet with a good amount of passion fruit. Behind that, getting some nice earthy, funky saison yeast. Some apricot pushes through. Getting some candied sugar. Sadly, nothing more to go on. Whats there is nice, but could be better.

T: This one starts off with some earthiness from the prickly pear. Getting some nice graininess from the pear, lightly sweet. Passion fruit amps up the sweetness a bit. Getting some funk off the saison yeast. Earthy, dusty, little spice. Touch of sugar. Things round off with some citrus hops.

M: Medium bodied with a light carbonation. Really light actually, but it keeps from the arena of flat. More than a little acidic on the palate and throat, has some bite. Dries out pretty well. ABV brings some heat to the throat. Aftertaste is all earthy funk with some hops.

OA: Really enjoyed this one surprisingly considering the negative things I have heard about it. Kills it on the flava IMO. Sure the look is lacking and the smell is more than a little muted. It has room for improvement but I am a big believer that taste makes a beer and this beer has plenty of that. Dig it and I would drink this again.

Price: $6.99 Served In: Tulip
