Gracias to TipTop for the growler!

If I could give a 4 for appearance, I would. Pours a beautiful deep gold/red/russet color with a creamy offwhite head that just sits there like a crown. Milkshakes should look this good. Aroma is that "I am gonna kick your butt and you're gonna like it" melange of toffeeish malt, slight citrus hops, hints of ripe apple and whiffs of alcohol. As it wrms a deeper, slightly musty note kicks in - rounding rather than detracting.

Starts out with this vast, fruity/toffee maltiness that just washes over the tongue, coating the mouth in a Red Delicious/toffee juiciness. This beer is literally mouthwatering. Then the hops kick in - citrus on the flavor, a stellar red grapefruit sort of thing, with an underlying firm, gripping balancing bitterness - not easy in a beer this big. Bitterness and very faint hints of cafe au lait - the only descriptor I can come up with - come through later on, along with a mellow warming surge that complements rather than detracts. Like I said, big and proud of it. Chewy and that limits its ultimate consumption, but the pints you drink are memorable.

This is like Middle Ages Druid Fluid, fresh from the taps, with added depth and better yeast but solidly in that hoppy barleywine family. Great beer from a great brewpub.
