22oz Bomber

My neighbor Dave brought me this bottle from the brewery on a recent trip of his throughout Alaska, thanks again Dave!Earth is a self titled Belgian-style Chocolate Milk Stout, should be interesting. A slow pour produces a dark dense mocha head of three fingers. As the head slowly drops it crackles and pops leaving behind some moderate but sticky lacing. All this sits atop a black hole of a beer which is a surprise from the lower abv. There's not a hint of light coming through this bad boy and you can see the carbonation colliding with the head along the glass. That dark head eventually falls to a skimming with a thick ring around the glass.

There's an interesting aroma on this Belgian-style stout with roasted malts with a very nutty aroma right off the bat. The roastiness follows through the finish while milk chocolate flashes here and there but only after each swirl of the glass. The cocoa nibs are noticeable on the backend and actually take over the aroma along with a touch of clean alcohol. I really enjoyed the aroma of this beer after the pour but as the head fades the aroma, unfortunately, follows.

The flavor follows the aroma closely at first. Roasted malts lay down a foundation for the peanuttiness and milk chocolate which reminds me faintly of a peanut butter cup. Cocoa nibs make a strong showing mid palate and create a rich and somewhat spiced cocoa quality. The swallow is where the Belgian aspect of this beer comes in. The yeast used throws of fairly heavy spices that would be found in BSDA type beers and they just seem to fight against the other flavors of this beer.

The carbonation is a little too aggressive for the style of beer and creates an airy fast moving mouthful of beer. The body is on the lighter then medium side and flows through quickly. The carbonation isn't that far off, just being picky I guess.

This bomber is going down easily and the high level of carbonation really pushes it through but a bomber in a sitting is enough for me. The out of place spicing on the finish keeps this beer from going down any easier.

Earth is a solid beer from Midnight Sun but there are just some strange components to it that just don't work for me, the spiciness and carbonation being two. I'm glad I got the chance to try this beer because there is some interesting ideas that went into it but it's just not my thing. Thanks again Dave!
