Received this brew from thebeast777 because he’s insanely generous. This will be my 3rd brew from Clown Shoes and I’ve really enjoyed everything so far. Drank from my Russian River tulip while watching the Lions vs. Bears.
Appearance- Pours a lightly chill hazed fairly bright orange with a small fluffy bright white head. A great cap and collar remains the entire beer with a bit of random lacing.
Smell- Nice subtle fruitiness in this one with a light Belgium yeastiness. Usually I’m all for a bigger bolder nose but the softness in this bad girl works well. A bit of mango and grapefruit mix into a spicy banana yeastiness. It’s not exactly citric smelling but just fresh and fruity and really nice. Not much else to say really, simple but nice.
Taste- Well it’s a lot like the nose in its simple subtleness. Starts with a light touch of fruit and a bit of earthy bitterness that gives way to a light touch of orange peel. A lot of grapefruit pith as it really shows that sort of raw bitter bite. The Belgium yeast used isn’t all that potent either as it really doesn’t do much for the flavor. It adds an ever-so-light spiciness that’s fairly earthy and really subtle. The finish is almost dirty as the bitterness lingers and lingers.
Mouthfeel- Medium body that borders on the lighter side with just a touch of warming. The carbonation is fairly aggressive like you’d expect from the style.
Drinkability- Overall this beer is really easy drinking but not the most flavorful Beligium IPA I’ve ever tasted. I’ve really become a big fan of Belgium IPA’s over the years and I feel like this one needs a bit more of the Belgium influence. It’s good but definitely could be better. Thanks much Kevin!!
