Old Review

22oz bomber I got at Showcase Bev. in Carrollton, GA. Poured into a nonic.

A:Poured a beautiful brown with amber highlights when held to light. Had a nice off white head that diminished down to a nice top cap that created some nice sticky lacing. This beer looks great.

S: Not a whole lot going on here to tell the truth. Sweet malt and hops i all that I can find.

T: Nice piney and citrus hops up front. A nice sweetness to some lightly roasted malt. There is a spiciness to this brew. Very well balanced.

M: A bit thinner than I thought it would be. Still a bit creamy as it coats the mouth and throat but I thought it was going to be much heavier. This beer finishes dry.

D: This beer desperately wants to be Arrogant Bastard. It is a great brew and amazingly easy to drink considering the ABV. This beer is not as complex as AB, but that can be a good thing. This beer doesn't kill your palate but still creates some awesome flavors. Plus I could drink a couple of these in a night where I couldn't drink more than one AB bomber. I would love to do a side by side with this and AB. This is still a great beer.

22oz. Bottle
$3.99
Sam's Downers Grove

Lagunita's Lucky 13 poured a delicious looking crystal clear copper. A 1 finger creamy slightly off white head formed on the pour that stuck around. Left moderate patchy lacing.

This is one hoppy red ale. Big sweetened grapefruit nose along with minimal pine needle. A nice caramel sweetness keeps the hops somewhat in line. Some alcohol fumes rise through the fruitiness.

There is a toasted bread maltiness that sets the canvas. The hops show up mid palate with a unsweetened grapefruit bitterness that leads into a sweetened grapefruit sweetness. Finishes with mild alcohol fumes and slight pine resin. Very nice.

Medium bodied with sluggish carbonation. The beer coats the throat with a prickly tongue numbing bitterness.

Easy drinker. This 22 is going to go down easy. I wish I would have picked up a few more of these.

An excellent big, strong, potent, hoppy red ale. I love hoppy reds and this, so far, is the best I've come across. Really an enjoyable and tasty beer.

22 oz brown bottle.

Poured into a victory hopdevil shaker pint. Has a amber color with red hue. Off white head that clings and laces nicely, and remains a layer across the liquid for the entire glass.

Smell up front for me was a caramelized brown sugar and with deep inhalation i could feel the burn of alcohol. very little hops to be smelled despite the bottle saying it was 76.92 IBU. I am hoping the stickiness of the head means lots of hops in, and smell is just muted.

This brewery is not usually my favorite one, but this brew surprised me. I am having it with my lunch, and it pairs well with some cheese and crackers. Up front is the floral and citrus hop profile I was afraid was lacking from the nose. It is not so strong as to burn the tongue, but it cannot go unnoticed either. Midpalate I am getting some of the same caramelized brown sugar flavors that I could smell. The finish is quite dry and slightly bitter. Pretty decently balanced. The alcohol is nicely tucked away too.

This one is midbodied but with enough carbonation to keep the hop oils from being too oily on the tongue and helping the finish to be dry.

The alcohol is hidden, and with food this bomber was easy to put down rather quickly, and it nearly gave me a lunchtime buzz. It is definitely worth the $4, and IMO one of the best offerings from Lagunitas. Shame it is a limited beer.

A - Nice clean amber colored body. Big, frothy tan head that shows no sign of going anywhere. Nice lacing.

S - This isn't your normal Lagunitas smell. Neither was the Freak Out. Seems like things are changing there, and maybe for the good. Big hoppy nose with a solid caramel malt base. Hops are mostly citrusy, but there is some pine there.

T - Solid brew here. Robust hoppiness with some pine needles and some sweet fruit taste as well as a bit of grassiness. Big caramel malts provide a nice backbone for this very hoppy brew.

M - Medium bodied with sticky, syrupy hops. Carbonation is light, but good.

D - One of the better beers from Lagunitas I have had. Well worth buying a few of.

Served chilled and poured into a weizen glass.

Appearance is very good. Bright, clear, copper colored beer with a nice fluffy head that simmers down revealing sticky, web-like lace on the sides of the glass. Fantastic lacing. Streams of carbonation bubbles rise to the head. Quite nice.

Smell is good. Caramel malt jumps out with a nice hop bouquet to round things out. Reminiscent of Stone's Arrogant Bastard.

Taste is good. Toffee and caramel malts and a piny, oily, bitter, clean finish. Fantastic balance in this beer.

Mouthfeel is good. Good level of carbonation and a slick velvet texture.

Drinkability is very good. This is where this beer excels. The clean finish makes this beer a very easy drinker that i could have all day.

Overall: Lagunitas did it again. Simply a tasty brew with terrific drinkability. Highly recommended.
