Review from 01/03/07

Reviewed from old notes that I just found laying around buried in a pile on my desk.

A - Clear, clean copper colored body. One finger white head with good staying power and decent lacing.

S - Sweet caramel malts mixed with some fruity hops.

T - Sweet malt and fruity hops as in the smell, but then there were some unexpected things that came up too. There was a big anise/black licorice taste that came on and came on entirely too strong in my opinion.

M - Medium bodied with decent carbonation.

D - Ok, but the anise taste became overbearing and got in the way of me really enjoying this beer.

Served chilled and poured into my 23oz Weizen glass.

Appearance is good. Deep orange and clear with carbonation bubbles quickly rising to the head. The head's very pronounced and fluffy.

Smell is good. Nice grassy hop aroma with caramel malt balancing things out.

Taste is good. Much like the smell but heavier on the bittering/grassy hops. The bittering hops and the caramel malts make for a well balanced and nicely put together brew. 9.2% alc is well hidden.

Mouthfeel is good. Carbonation is perfect for the style; tingly and spicy but with a smooth and full-filling finish.

Drinkability is very good. Easy to enjoy and having another (or two) wouldn't be a problem.

Overall:
Like most Lagunitas beers, the drinkability is very good and the flavors are interesting enough to keep you happy. Above-Average for the style but a well crafted brew. Recommended.
