22 oz bottle thanks again to the great Bags. Served up in a standard pint.
A: Pours up a very dark brown in color that is a seemingly black in the center of the glass. Held to the light, a little more browns push through along with some garnet. The pour got me a half finger of very light tan colored head. The foam has a good amount of stick to it and leaves lace all over the glass.
S: Notes of citrus hops and a little bit of pine. Malts have a pretty nice roasted quality. Smells of coffee and dark chocolate. Smell is light, but very nice.
T: The flavor kicks off with a good amount of roasty malt. Roasted coffee really shines. Dark chocolate bitterness and touch of milk chocolate sweetness pokes through at times. The hops are bit of an afterthought, but do push through all the malt action. Light grapefruit rind, some grassy, and then some pine resin. It doesn't really have a sharp bite, but it does balance and push ahead of the malt.
M: Medium in body and the carbonation is lighter than expected. Makes for a creamier feel. Stays mostly on the sweet side, but does have some bitterness to it. It tries to dry out but doesn't quite make it. No sign of any alcohol presence whatsoever. Aftertaste is a touch of citrus hops wrapped in chocolate.
OA: Not bad. A bit more malt forward than most Black IPAs, but still very tasty. Its not a hop bomb of a Black IPA, but it has very nice balance and big flavors that are very enjoyable. I would definitely drink this on a regular basis if given the chance. Tasty stuff and a nice start to trying beers from Hopworks.
