Thanks to Oxy for the bottle! I'll preface this with the admission that my bud in NC and I recently drank a number of hand-imported Altbiers from Dusseldorf, so the flavors of those are still close at hand.
Pours a deep copper with a a slightly offwhite head - very good looking beer. The aroma is spot on - caramelly sweet and very clean Munich malt with plenty of underlying fruitiness and a noble hop spiciness that is very appetizing.
The flavor does not let down the promise of the aroma at all. The initial German malt hit - Munich and pilsner malts maybe? - are round, slightly hazelnutty (a flavor that I am familiar with but have a hard time describing outside of the term "German malt") with a good amount of fruitiness from the ale yeast, and beautifully balanced with a bracing hop bitterness and noble hop (Hallertau?) aromatics. Slightly sprightly carbonation. Round, yet smooth. Insanely drinkable. Finishes so clean - just a long, lingering noble hop with sweet grain dryness.
I'd stack this one up against any Alt I can name. Fine, fine brew.
