Enjoyed as part of 2009 Open That Bottle Night.

2006 Vintage

Very dark, but not quite black. Quite carbonated, still. Tight lacing and thin head.

Huge smell of bourbon and alcohol hit immediately. This thing is three years old and hasn't mellowed much at all. Way in the back I get some figs and sweet smells.

Hmm...the taste doesn't match the overpowering smell. It's definitely boozy, but that's well-hidden. It is damn tasty, sweet first, but the bourbon is not in the taste. It's inhaled from the aroma and mixed in with the taste perfectly. The carbonation keeps it from being too thick, and helps the aftertaste stay clean and wanting to go back for more.

2006 release (8.0% abv).

A - Hazy cola colored body. Big, thick looking tan head is slightly soapy. Nice sticky lacing.

S - When I started swirling this one the bourbon smell wafted to my nose without even leaning into it to smell it. Vanilla and toffee working with a big alcohol nose. Maple syrup.

T - Interesting. This doesn't taste nearly as boozy as I thought it would based on the smell. Toffee and maple syrup cling to my tongue. Dark candy sugar has me licking my lips. Nice warming sensation as it trickles down my throat.

M - Medium mouthfeel and body. Carbonation is smooth and almost subtle.

D - For a bourbon barrel aged beer, I think this could be the easiest I have had to drink. Some barrel aged stuff would be a little much when cracking a 750ml bottle, but this shouldn't present a problem. One of my favorites from Goose Island.

2006 vintage, received from Tip Top via the first annual TBS Secret Santa - thanks bro!

Poured into my chalice. Thick pillowy tan head that lasted quite a while. Definitely high on the bourbon smell; additional background of vanilla, molasses, and malt.

Bourbon is still prevalent in the taste, but less pronounced than the smell would lead you to believe. Caramel, vanilla, chocolate, and plenty of alcohol, though that mellows as you go along. Thinner mouthfeel than I expected, though still coating; smooth with a dry finish.

Overall, a very good beer - somewhat intimidating at first with the massive bourbon smell/taste, but mellows over the course of the bottle. Thanks again TT!
