Binny's Orland

I have been sitting on this bottle for about a year now. The bottle released a murky mahogany liquid into the snifter that glows with amber highlights when backlit. Large carbonation bubbles adhere to the bottom of the glass and slowly release to the surface. The head was a little tough to pull up at first but an aggressive pour yielded a finger worth of creamy beige suds. After the head settled a swirling and thick ring is what's left behind and patchy lacing clings to the glass.

The nose of this beer is very unique and loaded with complexity. There's a very pleasant warming spicing that hits the nose first. The first thing that comes to mind is a cinnamon and brown sugar combination with ginger bread quickly following. Dark maltiness comes across in many different ways, all of them good. Walnuts, figs, and caramel all play a major role in the nose of this beer. This is a beer I could easily sit here and smell for a long while. The gingerbread aroma that comes from this beer is amazing.

The flavor seems to follow along the same lines but there are some differences. The cinnamon, brown sugar, and gingerbread are all present and play major roles is the flavor profile of this beer. There seems to be a slight mineralish quality that I could do without that slowly drops the score from incredible to delicious. Walnuts, figs, and dripping warm caramel all coat the tongue nicely, laying down a solid foundation for the subtle spicing.

The mouthfeel of this beer is spot on. The body is moderately heavy with a solid stick on the finish that keeps all the complexity lingering for a few seconds. Velvety carbonation lets this beer work through slowly allowing me to catch every nuance.

This beer forces you to sip with the unique complexity. There's layer upon layer of malty goodness that I just can't get enough of. Each drink is both warming and delicious.

I really like the direction Founders took last year with the release of two special addition bombers, Blushing Monk being the other. Unfortunately I haven't seen any of the same this year. This is a delicious, unique take on a barleywine with an interesting spicing. I wouldn't hesitate to pick this up again if available.

Thanks to OC for this brew!

Pours the color of a ripe date, deep shades of brown with fleshy red highlights. Very thin head on this one, only got about half an inch and it quickly settled to a ring.

Various ripe dark fruits on the nose. Raisins, cherry, dates, figs, prunes, apple, hints of chocolate, lots of caramel malts, slight oxidation, and a bit of nutty malts too. Biscuit and toast malts. Brown sugar and a bit of maple too.

Toasted and caramel malts upfront, lots of caramel sweetness near the finish with some cherry in the end. I’m also getting notes of chocolate and cocoa in the aftertaste. A little alcohol heat with the first sip. More chocolate and toffee flavors on the second sip. Some spicy yeast in the middle. Seems a little more spicy and hot after a few sips and the chocolate, toffee, and fruit flavors come through in the second half. Hmm, it seems as if the flavors take a turn with each sip. Now I get the chocolate and toffee flavors first with some toasted malts and multi-grain bread in the end. Then I take another sip and I get the fruity alcohol and spices upfront with the other flavors in the end. The Belgian yeast is quite influential in this brew, especially in the first half of the sip. Some plum and sugary raisin in the finish too.

Low level of carbonation and soft, slightly syrupy and thick…feels smooth on the palate.

I knew that this was a strong beer but did not realize it was 13% until I looked at the label!!! Drinks fairly easy and I’m going to have to start drinking this one a little slower.

Not much of a his when I popped the cap on this, little to no head with a thin layer around the glass. Beer is a rrich copper/light brownish color and looks thick.

This beer has all kinds of smell going on. Sweet malts, fruits, caramel etc.. Quite a bit going on that my untrained nose cant pick it all up.

Very interesting taste, kind of reminds me of a very solid old ale. Date's, caramel, chocolates, raisins? Just like the smell, alot going on. Once you swallow, you are hit with all these flavors and a slight bitterness that hangs on the tounge.

Great mouthfeel on this, good body, you can feel the carbonation on your tounge. Feels as thinck as it looks.

Overall, another solid beer from founders. Not one I would drink a ton of, but it's both different and interesting non-the-less.

A: Low carbonation level in this pup. The head is fizzy and going fast. The body is a light brownish garnet color with some haze in it.

S: WTF. Is this beer? Seriously strong smelling brew going on here. Jam packed full of raisins, dates, figs, walnuts, almonds, caramel, rum, sawdust, nutmeg, allspice…the list goes on and on.

T: Crazy crazy crazy. Begins with tastes of celery, some spruce and very rounded caramel. Marshmallow, vanilla and ginger are some of the next flavors to come in with butter cookies, coriander and vanilla yogurt next up. Immediately after the swallow, all the flavors really intensify. A simple bitterness coats the tongue, quite low for the style but that’s ok with me. Some alcohol vapors hit the nasal cavity bringing with it peach, cherry liquer and sharp raspberries. Finishes very sweet, borderline cloying with butterscotch, burnt brown sugar, crème brulee and toasted marshmallow. Lots and lots of flavors.

M: Full bodied and syrupy.

D: I’m totally enjoying this beer. Fairly unique and jam packed with flavor. Quite drinkable for how high the alcohol content is.

Thanks to either tangpong or OC. I received one from each, so they both get credit. Pours dark amber with a nice lingering tan head. Smell is sweet, fruity, little to no hops but an awesome smell. Taste is great, nice alcohol hop combination here fellas. Also some sweetness in the taste, thank goodness i have one more to age and see what this bad boy does.
