Curmudgeon by Founders Brewing Company
Old Ale
9.80 % ABV

Think classic sea fairing ports, local pubs, and weathered old fishermen. This old ale is brewed with molasses and an insane focus on the malt bill, then oak-aged. The result is a strong, rich, malty delight that\'s deceptively smooth and drinkable.

Is there no cure for mudgeon? Pours a mostly hazy brown color with a light toffee haze to it. A soft white head with ok retention, although didn't last through the tasting, and limited lacing.

The nose has a good malt backing with decent complexity. Some sweeter caramel and a lighter melonodian aroma. Some minor bready and a light cocoa aroma. Some esters and phenols are prevalent. Big sweet plum and light raisin notes. Some minor herbal and earthy hop aromas but limited overall. The alcohol really comes out with some fusel notes.

The taste is similar but not as complex as the nose would indicate. The malt comes out with a slight grainy, slight bready and a more sweet caramel. Very distinct in its flavors. Would have liked more depth and complexity overall. The hops are on the light side but still detectable. More of an earthy, English style. Stronger esters come out, mostly raisins with a hint of figs. Noticeable alcohol with a slight fusel-esk nose. Could be a bit cleaner.

The body is more to the full side than moderate. But as mention before, the mouthfell is a bit lacking and I am looking more some more depth. Some heat and fusel notes are a bit of a distraction. The carbonation is light but ok. Overall a decent barleywine but some age could work magic on this beer.

A musky glowing russet brown with a slim capping of tanned froth. Keeps a good collar with a few straggly branched arms of lace sticking across the glass.

Astounding aroma of maple, honey, oak soaked bourbon. Heavy, heavy, inviting as hell, warm whiskey tone to this sucker. Wow. Wonderful.

Smooth and warming with a good source of whiskey tones behind some maple, honey, vanilla, and white grape accents. Tenderly toasted malt background but huge in malted girth and warmth of gooey rich and thick caramel, maple, toffee, and minor fruityness all encompassed by one very nice powering warmth of whiskey oaken woodyness. No real finishing qualities however as it slides off the back end with an unwanted speed before the warmth sets in with just a slight backburst of crisp vanilla and left over whiskey wood.

Feel is warm, and more warm, and more warm. Strange how some beers with more then 9.3% seem to have no omff while this screams it. Big, bold, and beautiful; rich, smooth, and full. The only set back is the forementioned finish which is escapingly ghostly and parting in a manner that throws a curve in its overall, powering presence.

Be that as it may, that is what makes this quite a drinkable, dandy treat. For if it were all but power and strength, this would not be as easy to handle and may as well just be whiskey at that point.
A very nice Old Ale. Fulfilling and dreamy.

thanks to nucular. dark ruby pour with a thin ring of cream froth. nose of fruits, malts, raisins and caramel. good thickness with a flavor of sweet malts, raisins, and other dried fruits. sweet finish with some carbonation and the alcohol is very well hidden. definitely could benefit from some age i beleive.

I keep going back to this beer every so often. Every time I do, I remember what about it that I like so much. The complex of flavors and smells in this beer are great. A little rum. A little sweet. Some malt. Some caramel or toffee. Not too strong alcohol. Just a lot of good things going on here. And every time I am nearing the end, after it's warmed a bit, I swear that this beer is like a banana split with vanilla bean ice cream, caramel or toffee sauce, a touch of rum and a touch of whiskey.

Color is dark, red, brown. Smell is rum, caramel/toffee. A little sweet, and just enough alcohol.

Taste starts out with a little rum, semi-sweet flavor. As it warms, you get more of the rum and a few new flavors like the caramel and toffee.

Very rich, great malts, and a bite at the end. A great cold weather beer. Gets better as it warms.

Not a bad brew. Smell and taste are like whiskey/bourbon/wine? Way to over the top on the bourbon flavor. It over rides any real beer characteristics. Maybe I need another one and need to let it sit a while...
