Received this brew from Gibby a few months back. I’ve enjoyed the other “Exit Beers” so I’m sure this one will be excellent as well. Drank from my Surly Darkness snifter while watching Round 3 of the 2011 US Open.
Appearance- Pours an absolutely pitch black with a nice frothy one finger dark brown head. Eventually a small cap and collar remains along with a bit of random lacing.
Smell- Very roasted with a damn near burnt smell. The char even smells dry! A fair amount of milk chocolate works in but it’s not all that sweet smelling. Perhaps even a touch of smokiness works in as I smell the beer a bit more. Finishes with a touch of raisin and dark fruit.
Taste- Surprisingly a bit hoppier and brighter than the nose led me to believe. It’s still got a fair amount of roast but nothing too extreme. I’m surprised by how I get almost no chocolate what-so-ever. The beer is dry and chalky with a fairly bitter bite. A touch of citric hoppiness that borderlines on grassy at times really is the overwhelming flavor in the beer. It overpowers the roast and chocolate. The finish is bitter with a touch of lingering char and hop.
Mouthfeel- Light in body and fairly aggressive carbonation result in a fairly odd feel for a chocolaty stout. The beer is bone dry.
Drinkability- Not really what I expected or what the name of the beer suggests, but it’s still really tasty. The beer is aggressively hopped and doesn’t really let the chocolate come through. Whoever they bought this chocolate from in New Jersey should be pissed! Thanks much Jeff!
