12 oz bottle I got from Five Points Bottle Shop in Athens, GA. Poured into a snifter.

A: Pours a really nice dark brown that has some really beautiful amber hues when held to the light. Got a good finger of creamy white head that had some decent retention as it slowly fell to a thin, then thinner, ring. Left some nice sheeting in the lacing throughout. Looks good. Please don't suck.

S: Not . . . very . . . good. Sweet malt and maybe some fruit. Can't really tell because of the overbearing smell of rubbing alcohol. I can smell it from five feet away. Smells not that great. Turning me off. I will push on.

T: Nice roasted malt first and foremost. There is a touch of licorice. Not as much as the label implies. Then some dark fruit. Dark wine grapes, black cherries, maybe some prune. Alcohol is luckily not that heavy. Piney hops are here too. Kinda nice, but could be better. Only a 4 for you HORN DOG!

M: Medium bodied brew. A bit thinner than I want. Doesn't really coat as nicely as I would like from a barleywine. Finishes pretty clean with little aftertaste. Alcohol is nil when cold, but comes out when warm. Warms the throat and stomach. That saves it a bit.

D: This could be better but it is better than all of the Flying Dog brews I have tried, not saying much though. Doesn't have to overwhelming metallic ass taste Flying Dog brews usually have and kill any chance of liking the brew. Metallic taste is there but extremely subdued. Not a bad beer, but I wouldn't pay for another. There are better Barleywines out there.

first Horn Dog and i'm left mostly unimpressed. it's thin, not very aromatic or flavorful. maybe i got a bad bottle but this one almost tastes more like a hoppy red than a barleywine.

i'll probably pass on this one in the future

At first you tend to think you are drinking a slightly tastier version of gasoline. After the first few sips I was thinking it was a waste of money, tasted like hell. About halfway through, the flavor started to grow on me. By the time I finished it I was thinking this isn't too bad. After the second one, the world was full of sunshine and lollipops. With a 10% ABV it didn't take long to feel good about this stuff.

Price: $2.50 Served In: Pint Glass
