Sheol barleywine pours mahogany and glows as a whole when backlit. Streams of tiny carbonation bubbles rise slowly to the surface. A half finger creamy white head grew upon the pour and eventually faded to a skim coat with a thick ring around the glass. Moderate lacing is left after each sip.

Sheol has a unique aroma. Although this is more of an English style barleywine there is a generous helping of American hops in there. There are definite beginnings of toffee and plum with a touch of Bing cherries and brown sugar. The hops show up on the backend a touch of citrus and faint pine.

Flavor is pretty well spot on with what I encountered in the aroma. The only addition to the flavor is a layer of caramel that adds a bit more complexity. There's some alcohol spiciness on the finish. All the separate flavors seem to mesh together very well creating a good barleywine.

The body is on the lighter side of heavy. Creamy and rich mouthfeel coats the back of the tongue. The 8.5% abv gives off a little warmth in the chest.

This is a pretty easy drinker for such a big abv. The smoothness combined with the unique flavor profile make for an enjoyable sipper.

This is a good English style barleywine from the guys at Flossmoor. I've sampled the barrel aged version of this before and this is a totally different beast. Has the sweetness up front but plenty of hoppiness to round everything out.
