A - Pour produces a fizzy light brown head that is made up of smaller bubbles. Being fizzy, I figured this would be gone quick, but it stayed around for a bit, reducing to a nice skim on the surface and a thick bead around the edge of the glass. Body is much darker than your typical brown ale, being dark brown and almost completely opaque. It only allows light in through the sides of the glass.
S - Big roasty dark malts. Some light coffee. Deep chocolate on the nose. Who are you kidding? This doesn't smell like a brown ale. This smells more like a robust porter.
T - Starts right off with the chocolate. Bittersweet baker's chocolate is the most present, with cocoa and semi-sweet chocolate following suit. Some light roastiness comes in, not overpowering anything but playing along. Light hop bitterness sort of highlights things. Sweetness of molasses sort of finishes this one off.
M - Medium bodied. Smooth and slick.
Overall - There's a lot here that reminds me of a hometown favorite, Surly Bender. Great take on a brown ale that borders on a porter. If the flavor followed up on the superior smell, oh my. Even without, this is a super solid brew.
