H.E.R.O by DuClaw Brewing Co
American Porter
0.00 % ABV

The winning entry in our first ever H.E.R.O. homebrew competition, this jet black Chocolate Peanut Butter Porter is full-bodied with a creamy, luxurious mouthfeel and roasted malt flavor accented by notes of chocolate, coffee and peanut butter that last from first sip to the smooth dry finish. EVERY SINGLE PENNY from the sale of this beer goes directly to charity, so drink up, help out, be a H.E.R.O.

Generously received this beer from thebeast777 for no particular reason at all. He was supposed to just send me a poster and he sent a shitload of beer! This will be my first DuClaw beer and I’m super stoked to try it! Drank from my Darkness snifter while watching South Carolina vs. Florida.

Appearance- Pours a nice black with a beautifully fluffy light tan head. A great cap and collar stick around the entire beer along with a bit of spotty random lacing.
Smell- Wow, the peanut butter is immediately noticeable and very strong in the nose. It’s rich and smells just like a fresh can of Planters nuts. I really hope that translates to the taste. A touch of raw earthy chocolate and a fair amount of roast do peak in – especially as the beer warms. The peanut butter is definitely dominate though, I really don’t get much else.
Taste- A light touch of peanut butter upfront before a wave of dark bittersweet chocolate moves in. There is a touch of some bitterness in the middle of everything but it’s light and earthy and not really hoppy. A light bit of vanilla creeps in with just a hint of coffee. Nothing crazy but there is a tiny bit of that acrid sort of roast that peaks in. The finish is where it really gets awesome. Loads of peanut butter just seems to linger and linger.
Mouthfeel- Nice creamy feel that’s smooth as silk with a light tickle of carbonation. My favorite part of the beer is that even with peanut butter and chocolate the beer is bone dry. Nice job.
Drinkability- Super nice beer here. Usually these sorts of ‘gimmick’ beers are overly sweet and weird and it’s hard to drink more than a glass. This isn’t one of those beers. The beer is delicious and drinkable with some intense peanut butter and chocolate flavors. It does it without being cloying or obscene in anyway. Southern Tier needs to take note.
