I finally open one of my rare bottles of JD Barrel Aged Blackbeerd in order to enjoy with a friend. I wish this was something brewed year round.
It looks black as coal and pours with a nice brown head. As soon as the beer hits the glass, you can smell hints of bourbon. A closer sniff will give you a nice roasted malt smell with a nice bourbon finish. The taste is full of vanilla, chocolate, and roast. You can't really taste much bourbon, but the oak barrel definitely gave plenty of rich vanilla. The mouthfeel is a little thinner than most big Imperial Stouts, but it really helps the drinkability. Since it isn't super thick, you can drink it any time.
This is a wonderful one time special beer from the brewery that never disappoints.
Drink it around 50F to get the most complexity and be sure to share with a friend.
