Thanks to Joey for opening up this bottle at the 'You Bring the Cheese Tasting' which took place on July 25-26th 2009. This seemed to be a 1984 vintage.
Mesmerizing and gross...Once we took off the foil we could see some black fungus or gunk surrounding the mouth of the bottle and covering the top of the cork. Opening this bottle really took some teamwork. The cork seemed like it was going to break into pieces as Chris was removing it, a piece of about an inch in length did break off. The beer was hazy, cloudy, and a light orange color with hardly any head, good ring retention though.
Super funky on the nose, loads of cheese, wet and rotten wood, very musty, lemons, maybe a bit of honey in the background, kind of hard to describe the sweetness I was getting. A bit of sulfur, nail polish remover, rotten lemons and citrus fruits. Very complex with an aggressive funk, must, and cheese profile.
Really tart lemons, oak, must, hay, horse blanket, sour grapes, grapefruit, lots of rotten wood and rotten citrus flavors as well, some sweet wheat flavors mid-way, and a salty finish. Moderate carbonation with a very dry and puckering finish. Nice acidity and settles well in the stomach so the drinkability felt high, yet this was a beer that begs to be sipped and is overwhelming on the palate. A great beer experience.
