It's Petrus ... it semi-satisfied my need for something sour. In the very beginning it's what I look for. I fair bit of tartness and mild-medium carbonation. As it warmed though, it fell apart. The tartness disappeared as did any feeling of bubbly goodness. Meh.

*Uploading my old reviews, this one has a review date of: 2-01-08. If I can acquire the beer again I will re-review it*

Pours a dark brown with some sherry overtones. A two inch crown of white foam rises to the top of my tulip glass and gradually settles to the thinnest ring..

Aromas of dark fruits, black cherries, oak wood, lemons, tart cherries, and some vinegar. Later on the vinegar and malt combine to make an aroma of mixed berries. It actually has a very inviting aroma of berries, oak, and vinegar with a trace of caramel malt hiding in the background.

Taste is rather disappointing, not sour or tart in anyway. It has a "flat" taste of dark fruits, in the sense that they are merely there but not strong enough to be dominant. Some hints of berries but again only very subtle and some brown sugar. This one leans more on the estery, fruity and malty side of the Oud Bruin style, I just wished there was a little more tartness.

Mouthfeel is quite good, lively carbonation and a semi-dry finish which, when combined, creates a slight effect of tartness, but only very minimal. The aftertaste is also lacking, not much hangs around except maybe a few notes of plums and brown sugar.

This is actually not a bad Oud Bruin, just nothing spectacular. I'll admit that I was given this bottle a few months ago, thanks Joey, but since I wasn't into vinegar/sour tasting beers I decided to leave this one until I developed a taste for this type (and Red Poppy certainly did that for me!). This one would be a good introduction to the style, not too overpowering.

A - Pours a clean mahogany colored body. Small fizzy head that is sort of soda like. Gone quickly too.

S - Molasses, toffee and caramel. Bit of cinnamon. Slight tartness.

T - Wow, not a lot of flavor here. Everything seems very muted. Light caramel and molasses. Touch of dark fruit. Sourness that I had hoped to taste is almost non-existent.

M - Medium bodied. Light carbonation.

D - This beer isn't bad by any means, but just doesn't do much for me within the style or any beer really. Can't find what the barrel added.

Had this, along with other Petrus beers, in my fridge for at least 8 months.

Served chilled and poured into my Duvel tulip glass.

Appearance is above-average. Fluffy, soapy, sand colored head forms off of the aggressive pour then quickly fades to a thin film. Color of the beer is a very dark brown with red hues on the edges.

Smell is average. That familiar Oud Bruin tart smell is there yet is subdued compared to others i've sampled within the style. I slight sweetness shines through toward the back end. Kind of bland.

Taste is average. Much like the smell; subdued flavors of tartness and sweetness. Finishes very smooth and clean. I keep fishing for more flavors but nothing comes up. Just too mellow and bland for the style.

Mouthfeel is above-average. Carbonation is very mellow (although apparent.) This makes for a thin, yet refreshing, finish.

Drinkability is good. I could finish a few bottles of this beer no problems but then I'd have to switch to something with more flavor.

Overall: I was expecting a beer with more flavor especially considering the style. I wouldn't turn one down but it's nothing to go out of your way for.
