Longshot Old Ale poured garnet into my snifter with mahogany highlights when held to the light. Tiny slow rising carbonation rises to the small skim of a head. The body is crystal clear when some light manages to shine through. Leaves spotty lacing. This beer looks powerful.

First up in the smell is a strong nuttiness along with a handful of dark fruits. Prunes, dark plums(I know these are plums too), and figs. I even pick up cherry cordials and molasses. The fruit aromas are seriously heavy. There's a very deep caramel maltiness.

Flavors are much the same as the smell. The same fruits are present but aren't near as potent as the smell. The caramel starts, continues and ends deep thoughout. Molasses and brown sugar also make strong showings. Alcohol fumes rise on the swallow. I seem to pick up a tiny amount of oxidation, probably from the malts, but I doubt it is since this bottle is fresh. It adds good character. This is definately enjoyable.

The body is on the heavier side of medium with a nice warming alcohol effect. Smooth and sluggish in the mouth. Very nicely done.

For such a heavy flavored beer this is actually an easy sipper. By no means can it be drank one after the other but I would be able to sip on this beer for awhile.

This is my favorite of the Longshot series. Well made with a lot of very good flavor. Perfect for such a cold and windy noight like tonight.

A - Dark hazelnut brown body that is clean and clear. Beige head is small, made up of uniform small bubbles. Head recedes pretty quickly.

S - Big rich sweetness grett my nose right away. Toffee and caramel. Butterscotch. Some red fruits with pronounced cherry. Slight alcohol hint here.

T - Big smooth sweetness thoughtout the entire experience. Start with toffee, caramel and cinnamon. Big time marachino cherry flavor comes in. Slight roastiness lingers in the background. Finishes with small amount of warming alcohol.

M - Big and syrupy, yet smooth and easy to drink.

Overall - Very nice beer here. Funny how the Longshot beers can be more enjoyable than most of the regular SA lineup. Seems like more of a Belgian Strong Dark Ale than an Old Ale.

A: Burnt brown sugar simple syrup color with a medium sized toasted marshmallow color head. Fairly straight forward but so far so good.

S: Carmelized onions, stewed carrots, chocolate dipped bananas, some butterscotch and some dried graham crackers.

T: Begins smooth, sweet and seductive. Quality blend of camelized brown sugar, dark honey and butterscotch offer a really attractive malt background. Alcohol blends with stewed veggies to give depth but with enough balance so the stewed flavors don’t get over bearing. Little bit of banana, pineapple and apricot give a very slight tropical flavor. Finishes sweet with out being cloying with vinous qualities.

M: Medium body, soft.

D: Nice beer with great flavor. I’m looking forward to this beer with a few years on it.
