Thanks to Danny at La Bella Pizza for the opportunity to try this beer last night (6-16-09).
Apex poured a golden amber with a half inch of egg-shell colored crown of foam. Good retention and some lacing on the glass.
The aroma was of pine upfront but quickly turned into a citrus and tropical blend of grapefruit, hints of pineapple, various fruits, orange candy; then the malt base came through with some toffee, sweet toast, and notes of brown sugar. More sweet citrus aromas appeared as the beer opened up. Lemon and more grapefruit were more apparent as it warmed up, as well as a tad of a buttery/butterscotch aroma.
Just like in the aroma, pine upfront but then a rush of tropical fruits like orange candy, sweet grapefruit, cherry, and a grassy finish. Toast and toffee at mid-palate. The dryness is medium level with a resiny hop finish. Some notes of pine and almost woodsy flavors near the finish. Medium bitterness in the finish. Very tasty beer, lots of hop flavor without being too bitter, making it very easy to drink.
Smooth and creamy carbonation, dangerously drinkable.
