I had this beer on tap at Hamilton's Tavern on 4-24-09.

I tried this beer before, at the Stone 12th Anniversary Fest I believe and I thought it was pretty good so I was looking forward to having it again.

The first thing that surprised me was that this one was getting poured in smaller glasses and I probably didn't get more than 8oz of beer, whatever...gives me a chance to try some more beers I guess. The beer was a dark brown color with vermillion tones when held to the light. Nice inch of foam on top with excellent retention. Some lacing is left of the glass after a sip.

Very toasted malts, crystal and caramel malts on the nose. Minimal hop aroma at the beginning, might have to let this beer warm up or breath a bit because I wasn't getting much. Some slightly citrus and maybe earthy hops in the background. As it warmed up it exhibited some brown sugar and dry dark fruits like dates and a bit of raisins. Not that impressed and a bit let down compared to other imperial reds I've had. I was expecting more hop character out of this. There was also some boozy alcohol when the beer warmed up.

Hints of citrus bitterness with a deeply toasted and caramelized tasting malt flavor. Some prunes and fruitiness form the yeast in the second half of the palate. A bit of brown sugar and a slight lingering earthy bitterness. Touch of herbal and a somewhat ashy flavor too. Burnt toast in the finish with some dark fruits. Alcohol noticeable in the finish and as the beer warms up.

Medium carbonation and a clean finish. Good drinkability but I wasn't craving more of it.

Drank off a 1.5 year old keg at the Stuffed Sandwich

A: Muddy auburn caramel color with little opacity. Head is small yet present, an attractive khaki color

S: Raw dough, butterscotch, maple, strawberry pie and a slight fragrance of piney hops.

T: Start with crispness then turns malty, syrupy and sweet. Then bitterness comes in like a torpedo. Fresh grapefruit citrus melts into candy sugary yams and berry preserves. Marshmallow and butterscotch merge with these flavors before pie filling finally makes a play for the final flavor.

M: Medium body, some carbo sting.

D: Aging nicely. I would like to try this fresh, but it was very good how it was.
