Thanks to Gunit and SBD for the two bottles. Busted open on my first night off of work in over two weeks, poured into a darkness tulip.

A: Pours a seemingly flat looking dark brown walnut color with only the thinnest ring of foam around the edge and no head whatsoever to speak of. The body is murky as hell and gives off a dark scarlet hue when held to a light. Nice looking body but the lack of head is disappointing.

S: The smell is really quite lovely and deeply complex as well. The barrel aspect is heavy handed and upfront, but it does indeed meld well with the lush caramel and semi-roasty and sweet malty notes that are thick and pleasing. Notes of butterscotch, sweet-liquor, vanilla, and light coconut ride in and out of the background as well. Lots of great character for a BA BW, almost reminiscent of the perfect storm in the nose.

T: The taste is not as clean and well integrated as the smell let on, but it is indeed strong and complex. Lots of sharp fruity booze notes, woody toasted oak, vanilla/butterscotch, thick caramel/medium-roast malts, and even a touch of bitter nuttiness (does that even exist?) all vie for attention. It needs time to mellow and integrate me thinks, but as is it’s still tasty…albeit overpowering and a bit messy at times.

M: The motuhfeel is big and sweet, with lots of sugary stickiness but an odd drying sensation on the back that doesn’t resemble hoppiness but is distinctly noticeable. The carbonation really needs to be a bit more present, as it’s nearly flat. The finish is long and strong with a fair amount of lingering sweetness and boozy heat. Could use some improvement here.

D: With some warmth this beer really opened up nicely, but was still just a bit green overall for me. I think time will do it well, I only hope the carbonation in my other bottle is somehow a bit higher. Definitely recommended, but be ready for some sticker shock.

Price: $11.00 Served In: Tulip
