2002 Vintage - Big 750ml dark green bottle with a silver foil top- pours out to a magnificent deep russet brown color; great color, very leathery and deep with a thick light tannish head thats fluffy and lays down to a skim always present, mostly lasting through consumption and fades some to a thin ring, lace in thin sheets at first but then becoming spots later.

Smell is all heft! Lots of thick malts, rich, caramel-tastic, darkly sweet and deep, some fruitly darkenedness with a heft of hops as well with piney resin thats highly floral and sweet. Nice alcoholic warmth much like a brandy over the top in the aroma as well. Yum! Aroma-rific!

Taste is mellowing smooth and warm with a good amount of deep and thick malts, a bit chewy and lightly roasty sweet, good caramel and fainted earthyness, some darker fruits show through with plum and fig, some mango, all showing the true front of a barleywine; malty! Hops then come in with a super fine and resiny bitterness thats quite easy to handle and has some light pineyness and deep floral notes. Seemed to lose some complexity as it warmed, it really mellowed out. The mellowness made it much more easy to drink, but the enjoyment level dropped some though as far as the flavor punch.

Solid soothing medium body feel with a smooth creamy lingering chewy finish with some warmth hidden well but acceptable in its presense of what is traceable amounts mostly coming through the nose. A nice mellow BW, some longer lasting body and flavor and this would stay year round in my fridge, not that it wouldn't now, I can't really get it here in MN, otherwise if it was I would.

Received this brew from Gibby in a trade not too long back. This is one of those beers that is fairly readily available and I’ve always wanted to try it but never got around to trading for one. Drank from my Bear Republic pint glass while grilling.

Appearance- Pours a murky copper orange with a beautifully creamy one fingered sandy white head. A beautiful cap and collar is maintained the entire beer along with loads of ringed lacing down my glass.
Smell- Full bouquet of Barleywine goodness here. Big hoppy aspect with hints of grass, dandelion, grapefruit and a touch of orange peel. As it warms and melds with the malt that great candy scent arrives. It reminds me of cotton candy or red licorice. Love that. Plenty of toffee and French toast from the malt along with a light whiff of alcohol.
Taste- Starts with a surprisingly subtle mix of hoppy deliciousness and malty brilliance. A mixture of lightly citric hops including lemon zest, grapefruit, and crab apple all invade the taste buds. The malt is no slouch though as the light caramel sweetness counteracts the bitterness beautifully. I get a small dash of toasted malt in the finish along with a bit of booze. The aftertaste lingers with a bit of fruit and caramel.
Mouthfeel- Big and thick and rich with a nice fine carbonation that aids in the super creamy feel.
Drinkability- Easily one of the tastiest Barleywines I've had the luxury of tasting in quite some time. It's super drinkable and has definitely hit the sweet spot in terms of malt/hop balance. Alesmith is a great brewery and between this beer and Speedway Stout, I’m in love. Thanks much Jeff!
